Enrique glided his tongue along Ernie’s white fur. He’d never seen an animal with such a thick coat. He was licking his mate to help comfort him. Or so he thought. Enrique wasn’t really sure why he was doing it except that some deep instinct compelled him.

He shot his head up when he heard twigs snapping. Enrique scented the air, searching for what had made that noise. When a squirrel ran past, he relaxed.

They couldn’t stay there long, but his little fox was exhausted. Enrique would carry him, but judging by the way Ernie had been squirming earlier, being carried humiliated him.

Enrique liked carrying the fox. Of course he knew Ernie wasn’t an infant, but it made him feel fierce and protective, and Enrique liked that feeling—of defending someone instead of just surviving life.

The scent of vampire hit him before he heard the almost-silent footsteps. Though it was a dark winter night, Enrique saw perfectly.

He grabbed the fox by his scruff and carried him to a hollowed-out tree. Ernie struggled, giving a chirpy bark. Enrique stuffed him into the tree, then shifted.

“You can't make a sound. A vampire is close.”

Ernie instantly quieted. He started to come out of the hole, but Enrique shook his head. “If you move from that tree, I’ll put my foot up your ass.”

The fox growled.

Enrique glared at him. His mate had a mouth on him and an attitude to match. But Ernie was small for a grown man, and the thought of him trying to tackle a vampire made Enrique shiver with fear.

As soon as he was sure Ernie wouldn’t follow, Enrique shifted and hunted down the scent, hoping he could intercepted the vampire before it found his little fox.

His little fox.

Had he really just thought that? Enrique shoved the thought aside as he drew deeper into the woods. The scent grew stronger. After he gave a low warning growl, the vampire moved from behind a tree. He was tall, slim, and wore only a pair of jeans and a red shirt. His dark hair contrasted his pale skin, and his fingernails were way too long, as if he’d grown them out for a theatrical effect.

The stranger smirked at Enrique. “Looking for Little Red Riding Hood?”

His eyes were filled with malicious intent. Enrique shifted back to his human form, praying he didn’t freeze his balls off. “You can do better than that,” he said.

“Oh, I plan to do so much better.” The vampire moved slightly to his right, eyeing Enrique with hunger. “It looks like someone already tried to dine on you. He carved you up pretty good.”

Just that fast he’d forgotten about his scars. The vampire pointing them out only served to piss him off. If the vampire attacked, Enrique would gladly take his rage out on him. “Run along, bloodsucker.”

He had never been fond of the undead. They were a society of monsters who preyed on the innocent, hid in dark alleys to feed on the humans, or opened clubs to lure the unsuspecting into their trap so they could feast at their leisure.
